An Arts Society Wimbledon lecture by Anne Sebba
Ida and Louise Cook were destined never to marry after the decimation of men in World War One. When Ida became a successful novelist, the sisters used their earnings to indulge their love of opera, travelling all over the world but especially to Salzburg. Familiarity with Austria enabled them to undertake dangerous missions in the 1930s, rescuing Jewish musicians and others from the Nazis. This lecture will explore the glamourous world of Opera, that transformed their lives and the lives of the families they saved.
