Watch the Windmill in Action!

Have you ever wondered what the Wimbledon Windmill looks like when the sails are turning? Find out on the first May bank holiday weekend as a WPCC Ranger heads to the roof of this iconic landmark to release the brake and set the sails in motion at 2pm on both Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd.

Depending on the wind, the sails will turn for just 30 to 45 minutes, so don’t be late or you may miss it! If the wind doesn’t appear, the sails will be turned manually for just a few minutes.

Turning the sails is part of a planned maintenance routine to make sure everything on the Windmill is still working and nothing has seized up – it is rather old, after all! So if you can’t make it along in early May there are plenty of opportunities throughout the Summer and Autumn to watch this fabulous machinery in motion:

  • May 30th / 31st
  • July 4th / 5th
  • August 8th / 9th
  • September 12th / 13th
  • October 17th / 18th
