Between 18th and 25th April Wimbledon & Putney Commons is taking part in the Big Give’s Green Match Fund as they aim to raise £10,000 to conserve the heathlands on the Commons.
Heathlands are important for biodiversity as they support a range of species, yet this habitat is now rare in London, with Wimbledon and Putney Commons being home to some of the last remaining fragments in the capital.
Left unmanaged, the Commons’ heathland will gradually be lost to woodland and bracken. The lizards, birds and invertebrates that depend on it would lose the habitat they need to survive. Without grazing, conserving heathland has to be done manually and is highly labour intensive. Whilst WPCC is lucky to have volunteers that support this work more equipment is needed to ensure their hard work has a lasting impact.
By making a donation during the campaign, you can double your impact and help to ensure that this special habitat is not lost. You can also help by sharing the Commons’ social media posts and spreading the word to everyone you know that loves nature in London.
