Did you always want to work in hospitality?
It wasn’t something I really thought about – I fell into it to be honest. But once I had started in the industry I’ve never looked back! I can’t think of a better job.
How long have you worked in pubs?
A long time! I started with Youngs 25 years ago.
When did you become Landlady of the Rose & Crown?
Nearly 20 years ago now – I took over in April 2004.
Why have you stayed here so long?
The community. I love living here in Wimbledon Village, I mean who wouldn’t? It’s a gorgeous place and so warm and welcoming. I have made so many good friends here it truly feels like home and I can’t imagine moving anywhere else.
What makes a great pub or hotel?
I think it’s a combination of things. Obviously the pub itself. We’re lucky that the Rose is such a gorgeous building with so much history. And we have a lovely secluded courtyard out at the back – people love a pub beer garden! Location also helps. We’re on the High Street of a beautiful Village and right next to Wimbledon Common which is stunning. We’re so close to London but you could be out in the countryside it’s so green and relaxing. But the main thing in my opinion that makes a pub great is the people. And we have fab staff and amazing customers!
How would you describe the Rose & Crown?
It’s a traditional cosy English pub with rooms, which serves great beer, fine wines and good solid pub grub!
What is your most popular food dish and your best-selling drink?
Traditional fish and chips with mushy peas washed down with a pint of Young’s Original
What’s the biggest challenge about being a landlady?
Keeping everyone happy!
What’s the best thing about being a Landlady?
Meeting new and interesting people. Being in Wimbledon we attract visitors from all over the world. Not just during the tennis but the whole year round.
Do you have any famous patrons?
We sure do. (But I’m not telling!)
