Swords Travel opened their doors in Wimbledon Village earlier this year and have been thrilled by the welcome they’ve received. Here we get to know CEO and Founder Mark Swords…

Q: When did you begin your career in travel?

I started in 2003 as an overseas holiday rep for Thomas Cook. I’ve worked in retail management, for luxury tour operators, providing me with a fully rounded overview and understanding of the industry. Since my first day in the job, I have traveled around the world and experienced some of the most beautiful places the world has to offer.

Q: What motivated you to start your own travel company?

I was working for a large corporate retail travel company in Wimbledon and I just felt there was a certain element of service missing, so thought why not start my own business. That was back in June 2016.

Q: What would you say is the best thing about working in travel?

The best thing about working in travel is getting to see so much of this amazing world that we live in. I am very privileged to have travelled and worked around the world, experienced so many different cultures, stunning destinations and had some once in a lifetime experiences. I think once you’ve worked in travel it’s very hard to think of doing another career as there is nothing better than selling destinations that we loved visiting every single day.

Q: What is your most memorable trip to date?

Last year I was lucky enough to go on a tour of New Zealand and stay at seven of the luxury lodges. I was completely wowed by the whole trip and New Zealand is now one of my favourite destinations.

Q: You must have a few other favourites, what are the top 5 destinations you have visited?

New Zealand of course. Maldives, South Africa, Australia and Mauritius.

Q: Any destinations on your bucket list?

It is a never-ending list! But I’d definitely say Japan, Antarctica (Expedition Cruise), Vietnman, Borneo and Barbados.

Q: Do you have a favourite hotel?

That is a really tough question!  I’ve stayed in some amazing hotels around the world, but I would say one that stands out for me is The Lindis in New Zealand. We arrived by helicopter to this stunning architectural design in the middle of nowhere and I felt so completely at peace. It’s definitely stayed in my memory.

Q: If you could give any top travel tip what would it be?

When visiting a destination always check what you can pre-book in advance. It’s so important with some destinations to get your ‘must do’ excursions and trips booked before you go as leaving it until you arrive could mean you miss out.

Q: What level of service can clients expect from Sword Travel?

Whether it’s an annual family holiday, a honeymoon in Africa, or a once-in-a-lifetime trip, all our clients receive the same personal, dedicated service and excellent attention to detail that we pride ourselves on. Customer satisfaction is at the heart of our business.
