SUMMARY:Wimbledon Society Lecture: Josephine Butler
DESCRIPTION:In Victorian times\, a woman living quietly at North View on Wimbledon Common was stirring up a national storm. Josephine Butler wasn’t content to accept the injustices of her age. \n  \nOutraged by the routine mistreatment of girls and young women\, Butler became one of the most determined and fearless campaigners for women’s rights. Working alongside crusading journalist WT Stead\, she helped to expose abuses that society preferred to ignore. Together\, they pushed the issue into the public eye and fought to protect some of the most vulnerable people in Victorian Britain. \n  \nHer extraordinary story is brought to life by Susanna Rustin\, social affairs leader writer for The Guardian and former arts journalist at the Financial Times. \n  \nWhere & When: Emmanuel Church\, 24 Ridgway\, SW19 4QN on Wednesday 27th May @ 7 pm.

Also available on Zoom. \n  \nTickets: Members free. Visitors & guests: £10
