SUMMARY:The art of Atonement: How Germany commemorates World War II
DESCRIPTION:A Wimbledon Arts Society Lecture by Angela Finlay\n  \nIn the context of our World War centenaries\, anniversaries and the current debate about statues and monuments\, the subject of this lecture is hugely relevant. Germany’s very specific situation rendered all traditional concepts of monuments and memorials irrelevant and inappropriate. How does a nation of former persecutor’s mourn its victims? How do you remember what you would rather forget? The idea behind counter memorials is to keep lessons of the past alive in the individual psyches of the people. \n  \nWith Anglo-German roots\, artistic background and years of research\, lecturer Angela Finlay is in an ideal position to give insights into Germany’s on-going efforts to find artistic forms to remember and apologise for one of history’s darkest periods. \n  \nVenue: Sacred Heart Church Hall\, Edge Hill\, London SW19 4LU. Lectures are also available on Zoom. \n  \nTime: 8 – 9.30 pm (with coffee available from 7.30 pm)
