DESCRIPTION:Wimbledon and Richmond – A Refuge for London’s Botanical Gems. A talk by internationally respected botanist\, Dr Mark Spencer\n  \nSeveral hundred years of intense urbanisation has left its mark on the wild plants of London\, and now the unfolding climate and biodiversity crises pose new threats to our botanical heritage. A recent assessment of the status of London’s flora has shown that Richmond and Wimbledon are extremely important for the conservation and survival of many of these gems. This talk will provide an introduction into surviving plant rarities such as Meadow Saxifrage\, Copse bindweed and Strawberry Clover\, tell the tale of the wonders we’ve already lost and provide some insight into what needs to be done to save what remains. \n  \nWhen & Where: 7 pm on Tuesday 6 February 2024 @ the London Scottish Golf Club \n  \nBooking is essential as places are limited to 50. SUMMARY:The Creation & Restoration of Painshill
DESCRIPTION:A Wimbledon National Trust Association lecture by Cherrill Sands \n  \nPainshill in Surrey was one of the finest landscape gardens of the eighteenth century.  It was the vision of Charles Hamilton who created a garden of mood\, designed to play on the senses and imagination. \n  \nDuring the 20th century Painshill was neglected\, the buildings decayed and the garden became overgrown.  Through the efforts of the Gardens Trust and local historians\, most of the land was bought by Elmbridge Borough Council. \n  \nIn 1981 the Painshill Park Trust was formed to rescue and restore the garden.  By using archive research\, archaeological excavations and continual physical work\, the magic and beauty of Painshill has been discovered. \n  \nWhen & Where:  Wimbledon National Trust Association lectures are held at 3pm once a month on Saturday afternoons in the autumn and winter/spring at Christ Church Hall\, 2a Cottenham Park Road\, London\, SW20 0RZ.
