George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham: ‘The Handsomest Man in Europe’ & Patron of the Arts
An Arts Society Wimbledon lecture by Lucy Hughes-Hallett
George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, was the favourite of King James I and Chief Minister to King Charles I. Known as the Handsomest Man in Europe, he surrounded himself with beautiful things and was a discerning Patron. In his great house on the Strand he put together a fine collection of art works but, at the age of 35, Buckingham was murdered. His collection was scattered, but contemporary inventories allow us to reconstruct it and reveal some of the magnificent paintings he owned and the innovative work he commissioned.
