An Arts Society Wimbledon Lecture by Mark Ovenden
This lecture will discuss the sometimes surprising attempts to create graphic unity between the operating companies of the Underground, as it expanded from its earliest days. We will look at Leslie Green’s architecture and the Arts & Crafts movement, Frank Pick and Edward Johnston’s typeface, Charles Holden’s architecture, Streamline Moderne, the Art Deco movement, the New Works Programme, post war austerity/design. Also, the Victoria Line, the creation of TfL, and the new schemes of today.
Where & When
Arts Society Talks are held at the Sacred Heart Church Hall, Edge Hill, London SW19 4LU and on Zoom, on the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August) starting at 8pm. Coffee is served from 7.30pm onwards when members have a chance to meet one another. Zoom viewers may join at 7.45pm.
